MOUNT PLEASANT - Ever since the NCAA instituted guidelines for being a Division IA football school in 1986, Central Michigan has met the criteria.
One of the criteria was averaging 17,000 fans per home game and the Chippewas have never been under that mark since the first full season in Kelly/Shorts Stadium in 1973. In fact, CMU has averaged 19,333 in 140 home games since the stadium opened.
"We've been a qualifier each and every year," said Athletics Director Herb Deromedi. "There's only a couple of Mid-American Conference schools who can make that claim and we're proud to be one of them.
"However, we are always concerned that inclement weather or other circumstances beyond our control may effect our attendance and for that reason we need the support of our alumni and friends of CMU more than ever. Season ticket holders play a major role in keeping our numbers up there."
