They say there are two sides to every story. Brian Colar's story also has two sides. First, he is valued as a hard-working Central Michigan University football player. Second, he is a person with a big heart for his family.
Football has given Brian many good experiences throughout his college years. He played for two other colleges before transferring to CMU. "Central is bigger and has more opportunities, more resources and better facilities," Colar explained.
He says he gets a big adrenaline rush from "making a big hit where I know that I've inflicted pain on him, and having the crowd roar."
A memorable moment for Brian was when CMU played Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. "We ran onto the field and they were just booing us," he said. That was a rush for him and got him even more psyched. Speaking of psyche, Colar is known to be the loud teammate before game time. "I'm usually the loud one in the locker room," he said. "I'm going to be loud."
Colar only gets to visit his family and son, who live in Bolingbrook, Ill., about once a month or occasionally when they attend CMU football games. Brian claims that it's the small things that he misses the most about his family such as his mom's face, his sister's attitude, his brother's moods and his son's smile. A tattoo on his arm of a cross with a crown and wings represents the special bond that he has with his deceased father. It is symbolic to him. He says that when the football season is finished he will be excited to visit his family more often.
Chicago is the place where Brian Colar would like to start his journalism career. He has the Chicago Tribune, Jet magazine or another Chicago newspaper in mind for a starting point. His skill to easily transform his thoughts onto paper and his ability to interpret others' actions, words and movements are exactly what he needs to be successful in his field. He also writes for the CM Life newspaper's entertainment section to gain writing experience. Brian hopes that his double major of journalism and psychology will lead to an editorial position.
The story of Brian Colar wraps up with his own words to live by: "Take the good with the bad. Learn from the bad experiences, but don't dwell on them. Enjoy life and take advantage of the time that you have now."
