Gymnastics Travels To Cardinal Classic

THE TEAM: The Central Michigan University gymnastics team (1-2 overall, 0-1 Mid-American Conference) travels to the Cardinal Classic where it will face host Ball State University (1-2, 0-1 Mid-American Conference) and Illinois State University (5-0) on Friday, Jan. 26. The meet is set to start at 7 p.m.
THE COACH: Jerry Reighard enters his 17th year at the helm of the CMU gymnastics program. He has led the Chippewas to eight MAC championships and two appearances in the NCAA regionals. Reighard also helped Nicole Bills (1999) and Nikki Liphardt (2000) to a berth in the NCAA championships. He has compiled a 201-118-2 record and an 82-27 MAC slate.
LAST WEEKEND: The Chippewas fell to Western Michigan, 193.400-192.725, on Jan. 21.
Tammy Verrinder (London, Ontario/So.) took top honors in the all-around (38.675) and also tied for first on the uneven bars (9.825). She also tied for fourth on the balance beam (9.650). Verrinder's other scores included a 9.60 on the vault and a 9.60 in the floor exercise.
Andrea Price (Woodhaven/Sr.) tied for the top spot on the uneven bars with a career-high 9.825. Price also turned in a 9.675 on the floor exercise.
Bethany Couturier (Grand Rapids/Jr.) recorded a pair of second-place finishes. She took second in the all-around (37.875) and the balance beam (9.75).
Kelly Duce (Rochester Hills/Jr.) took second in the floor exercise (9.850) and Michele Orloski (Clifton Park, NY/So.) tied for fourth on the floor exercise (9.75).
VERRINDER LEADS: Sophomore Tammy Verrinder led the Chippewas with a pair of first-place finishes. She won the all-around with a 38.675 and tied for the top spot on the bars with a season-best 9.825.
RARE LOSS: The Chippewas loss to Western Michigan is just their second conference loss in three years. CMU's other conference loss was to Ball State (192.800-190.050) in 1999. Central was undefeated in MAC action in 1998 and 2000.
NOTES: Senior Andrea Price posted a career-high on the bars with a 9.825 ... Kelly Duce turned in a career-best 9.85 in the floor exercise.
UPCOMING: The Chippewas open the home season by hosting the Michigan Classic on Feb. 4 and continue their homestand on Feb. 11 against Eastern Michigan.
