LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The fourth-seeded Central Michigan University field hockey team (7-11, 4-5 Mid-American Conference) lost to fifth-seeded Ball State in the opening round of the MAC field hockey championships in Louisville, Ky., on Friday afternoon, 1-0.
The Cardinals broke a scoreless tie when Allison Haynes scored off a cross from Afton Hess with 3:10 remaining in the first half. The Chippewas made a charge in the second half, taking eight shots and attempting five penalty corners, but fell short.
Cardinal goalie Susan McDowell made six saves in recording the shutout. Chippewa goaltender Janel Spero (Shoreham, N.Y./Jr.) made four saves in the losing effort.
