DAYTON, Ohio - The Central Michigan men's basketball team (1-1 overall) came out brandishing quickness on the perimeter but it was Dayton's inside game that gave it the advantage, 81-65.
David Webber led the Chippewas' effort with 19 points. He needed only 13 to pass Dan Roundfield and his 1,318 career points. Webber now has 1,324 career points. Whitney Robinson had 15 while Chad Pleiness added another 12.
With Chris Kaman serving the second game of a two-game suspension, the Chippewas took the floor with a three-guard set. The Flyers took advantage of size match-up, outscoring CMU 36-26 in the paint.
The Flyers pulled out to the early 5-3 lead before the Chippewas tied the contest at seven with 16 minutes left in the half. Pleiness' lay-up with 13:07 cut the lead to one but it was all UD the remainder of the first half, pulling ahead by as much as 15 with 36 ticks left on the clock. A Chippewa bucket with nine seconds cut the halftime lead to 13, 41-28. The Chippewas shot .370 (10-of-27) from floor in the opening stanza compared to Dayton's .550.(15-of-27).
Dayton came out gunning in the second, opening with a three-pointer but both teams came out lighting up the scoreboard. The Flyers' 13-point lead upped to 16 before the Chippewas cut it down to a manageable eight, finishing a 9-2 run with 11:12 remaining. But, Dayton kept the offense coming by scoring at a .538 clip and capturing the commanding 21-point lead with 3:39 left. Dayton cruised to the 16-point victory.
The Chippewas return to action in a post Thanksgiving affair with Georgia State. Head Coach "Lefty" Driesell and the Panthers invade Rose Arena on Saturday, Nov. 24, with tipoff set for 2 p.m.
