MOUNT PLEASANT--The Central Michigan University softball team has been picked to win the Mid-American Conference West Division in the annual poll of the league's head coaches.
The Chippewas were tabbed to win with 72 points and eight first-place votes. Central finished second in the West in 2000 and won the conference tournament. Northern Illinois, who won the MAC regular-season championship a year ago, was selected second with 69 points and five first-place votes.
Following CMU and NIU were Ball State (48), Eastern Michigan (41), Toledo (22) and Western Michigan (21).
Bowling Green was tabbed as the team to beat in the East Division with 79 points and seven first-place votes.
Following the Falcons were Marshall (63/one first-place vote), Kent State (61/one first-place vote), Akron (59/two first-place votes), Ohio (49/two first-place votes), Miami (40) and Buffalo (13).
BGSU was picked to win the tournament with four votes while Northern Illinois got three votes and CMU two. Also picking up single votes were Akron, Ball State, Eastern Michigan and Marshall.
