KALAMAZOO--Central Michigan kept it close for awhile but Western Michigan proved to be too much as the Broncos posted a 77-58 victory on Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops CMU's record to 3-17 overall and 0-9 in the Mid-American Conference while Western Michigan improves to 6-13 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
CMU scored the first four points of the game on buckets by Beth Kindel and Alicia Rozak.
Western responded with eight straight ponts to take an 8-4 lead at the 16:08 point.
The Chippewas kept it close in the opening half, getting as close as a point on four different occasions. The Broncos outscored CMU, 7-4, in the closing minutes of the opening stanza to take a 40-33 lead into the halftime break.
Central scored the first basket of the second half to cut the Bronco lead to five points but Western Michigan quickly took control of the game.
The Broncos built their lead to as many as 25 points while the Chippewas could get no closer than 11 in the second stanza.
Key to Western Michigan's win was its strong shooting from the field. The Broncos shot 54 percent from the field (28-52), 53 percent from the three-point line (9-17) and 75 percent from the charity stripe (12-16).
The Bronco defense held CMU to a 32 percent (23-71) mark from the field.
Rozak led the Chippewas with 20 points while Kindel had 15.
Sarah Hurrle had a game-high 23 points to lead the Broncos while Sarah Duerloo had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
