Gymnastics Takes Second At MAC Finals

KENT, Ohio--Central Michigan's quest for a fourth straight Mid-American Conference title came to an end on Saturday afternoon when host Kent State won the title.
The Golden Flashes won the crown with a meet-record score of 195.675 and were followed by Central Michigan (194.900), Eastern Michigan (194.750), Ball State (194.600), Bowling Green (194.400), Western Michigan (193.450) and Northern Illinois (191.350).
The Chippewas had several outstanding performances including four title-winning routines.
Tammy Verrinder won a pair of titles to lead the Chippewas. She won the vault with a 9.925 and tied Bowling Green's Marny Oestreng for first on the bars with a 9.875. She also posted a 9.75 in the floor exercise and a 38.875 in the all-around.
Laura Chow, who was honored as the MAC Senior Gymnast of the Year, won the balance beam with a 9.925. She also took second on the vault with a 9.90 and a had a 9.825 on the bars.
Sarah Dame tied Oestreng for first in the all-around. Dame had scores of 9.775 on the vault, 9.80 on the bars, 9.775 on the balance beam and 9.80 in the floor exercise.
Verrinder, Chow and Dame were all named to the All-MAC first team for their efforts.
Gina Black was named to the All-MAC second team after posting a 9.625 on the vault, a 9.70 on the bars, a 9.80 on the beam, a 9.675 on the floor and a 38.800 in the all-around.
Other top scores were turned in by: Michele Orloski who had a 9.80 on the vault and a 9.775 on the floor, Melissa Chow a 9.70 on the vault and Tara Cartier a 9.725 on the bars.
Kent State's Brice Biggin was named the MAC Coach of the Year.
