Softball Wins Two At Speedline Invite

TAMPA, Fla.--The Central Michigan softball team won its first two games in the Speedline Invitational on Thursday afternoon.
The Chippewas posted a 3-1 win over Florida A&M and a 1-0 shutout over Maryland.
Central got on the scoreboard first against Florida A&M when Hope Robertshaw smashed a solo home run to leftfield in the fourth inning.
The Rattlerettes tied the score in the fifth with a run but the Chippewas took the lead with a run in the sixth.
Kim Burke gave CMU a 2-1 advantage with a sacrifice fly to score Becky Manson.
CMU added a run in the seventh when Robertshaw singled to left to score Lindsay Horvath.
Wendy Stephens picked up the win in relief to even her record at 2-2. She held the Rattlerettes hitless for the final 2 1/3 innings.
In the 1-0 win over Maryland, the game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Jen Skuta doubled to score Michelle Brander.
Chippewa pitcher Amber Puchalski gave up just three hits and struck out 11 in posting the shutout. The victory improves her record to 3-4 on the year.
Puchalski had a no-hitter through five innings. Maryland got all three of its hits in the sixth inning. The Terrapins loaded the bases with just one out but Puchalski struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
The Chippewas (6-10) continue play in the Speedline Invitational on Friday.
