Kent State Squeaks By Ohio

MOUNT PLEASANT--Kent State scored an unearned run in the seventh inning to post a 5-4 win over Ohio in Thursday's second game of the Mid-American Conference Softball Tournament.
Danielle Fincham led off the inning with a walk and eventually scored the winning run on an error by the centerfielder. Lea Dorto had singled but the centerfielder had trouble picking up the ball to allow Danielle Fincham to score.
The Golden Flashes had taken a 3-0 lead with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings.
Megan McGaughey crushed a home run to left center in the second inning to give Kent State the early 1-0 advantage. Fincham had an RBI single in the third inning and McGaughey doubled in a run in the fourth to make it 3-0.
Ohio came back with two runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-2. The Bobcats scored an unearned run and Melvin had an RBI single.
Kent State answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth when Le Ann Fonner had an RBI single to make it 4-2.
The Bobcats tied it at 4-4 with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Crystal Turner tied the score with one swing of the bat when she slammed a home run to left center.
Kate Leary picked up the complete-game win for the Golden Flashes. She gave up six hits and four runs (two earned) in improving her record to 12-6.
McGaughey had the hot bat for the Golden Flashes. She went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
The Golden Flashes advance to play top seed Central Michigan on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Ohio plays on Friday at 10 a.m.
