MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University softball coach Margo Jonker has completed her 2001 recruiting class by signing three student-athletes to national letters-of-intent. Joining the Chippewas next year will be Natalie De La Vega (Miami, Fla./Coral Gables HS), Jessica Garvin (Shepherd/Shepherd HS) and Desiree Parsley (Indianapolis, Ind./Decatur Central HS).
"We have a lot of depth in this class with versatile players," Jonker said. "They are all utility players who can fill a variety of spots as our needs are determined throughout the season."
De La Vega played shortstop at Coral Gables High School last season.
"We expect Natalie to make an immediate impact in our program," Jonker said. "She is a great all-around player, both at the plate and in the field. She also has foot speed and a good arm and will probably play somewhere in the infield."
Garvin pitched for nearby Shepherd High School and Jonker intends to redshirt her next season.
"Jessica has a great deal of potential and could be a force for us in the future," Jonker said. "She has to continue to mature and fine tune her pitches. Jessica possesses good velocity and an excellent change-up to go along with all the rest of her pitches."
Parsley excelled at the plate for Decatur Central High School.
"Desiree played third base in high school and she's an excellent hitter," Jonker said. "She is willing to play anywhere and her hitting potential may just get her in the lineup."
Central Michigan also signed three athletes in the early signing period -- outfielder Natalie Krillich (Chicago, Ill./HL Richards HS), shortstop/outfielder Christin Sobeck (Alpena/Alpena HS) and outfielder Danessa Wolfe (Tecumseh/Tecumseh HS).
The Chippewas enter the 2002 season as the defending Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular season and tournament champions.
