CMU Gymnasts Post First MAC Win

DeKALB, Ill.--The Central Michigan gymnastics team (194.125) posted a convincing Mid-American Conference victory over the Huskies of Northern Illinois (192.525) here Sunday afternoon.
Kara Reighard (Mt. Pleasant/Fr.) finished third in the all-around (38.500) as the only CMU gymnast to compete as an all-arounder. She placed second on vault (9.775), tied for fourth on bars (9.700), sixth on floor exercise (9.775) and tied for eighth on beam (9.250).
Shanna Duggan (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./Fr.) placed first on vault with a season-high 9.850 while CMU's other freshmen Sara Burtinski (Oshawa, Ont.) and Laura McLaren (Unionville, Ont.) took first (9.850) and second (9.800) place on bars, respectively. Both scores were season-highs for each gymnast.
Bethany Couturier (Grand Rapids/Sr.) took first place on the beam with a career-high 9.900, just .025 shy of the school record set last season. Burtinsky came in second on the beam with a season-high 9.875.
Michele Orloski (Clifton Park, N.Y./Jr.) and Duggan tied for second on the floor exercise with a 9.825, both earning season-highs.
The Central Michigan gymnastics team is now 2-3 for the season and 1-2 in the MAC. The Chippewas continue the road stretch at the State of Michigan Classic on Feb. 3 at 2 p.m.
