MOUNT PLEASANT--Both Central and Toledo provided fans with hard-hitting action as the Central Michigan University volleyball team (6-12, 2-3 MAC) picked up its first home win of the season. Toledo is now 10-7, 2-4 MAC. The game scores were 35-33, 30-18, 18-30, and 30-25.
The Chippewas jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match. Toledo rallied back in game three, but CMU's .318 hitting percentage in game four was enough to take the match. CMU had a .283 hitting mark for the match while Toledo posted a .225 hitting percentage.
CMU took a game-one winning streak down to the wire when it beat UT in an extra points battle, 35-33. The Chippewas have won game one in each of its six home matches.
Blocking was the deciding factor for the CMU win, while four Chippewas and four Rockets tallied double-digit kill figures. Central totaled 10 team blocks to UT's three.
"Blocking was key for us tonight," said head coach Elaine Piha. "I told the team that if we outblock them, we will win. Toledo is a tough serving team, but we were able to maintain control for longer periods of time."
Setter Shaleene Glombowski (Marysville/Jr.) picked up one block solo and four block assists. She dished out 46 assists and had 11 digs to snag a double-double. Glombowski hit an impressive .583 hitting percentage with seven kills and zero errors in 12 attempts.
Middle hitter, Liz Passen (Fishers, Ind./Jr.) was unstoppable with a season-high .462 hitting percentage (15-3-26). Passen put down four kills in her final four attempts in the deciding game. She had four block assists and two service aces.
Emily Lovejoy (Traverse City/So.) nailed a team-high 17 kills and picked up seven digs.
Right side, Tamara Fant (New Baltimore/Fr.) pounded 11 kills with three errors for a .308 hitting percentage. She also had five block assists.
Melissa Reynolds (Port Huron/Jr.) chipped in 10 kills in the victory.
Jessica Buck led Toledo's offense with 19 kills for a .400 hitting percentage. Natalie Mash and Heidi Neumeister picked up 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Becky Radomski grabbed a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs.
CMU is on a two-match winning streak.
