MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University and head football coach Mike DeBord have agreed in principle to an extension of his contract through the 2006 season.
Details will be finalized at a later date.
DeBord is in his third season with the Chippewas, and his teams have shown steady improvement. CMU won two games in 2000, three in 2001, and have already won four this year with two games remaining.
"We're committed to Mike DeBord and feel he is the right man for the job," said CMU athletics director Herb Deromedi. "We are sending a message to our current players, and those to come in the future, about the confidence we have in our head coach and the direction he's moving the program."
DeBord came to CMU after serving as an assistant coach at the University of Michigan for eight years, the final three as the offensive coordinator.
"The performance of our athletes off the field has been excellent," Deromedi said. "On the field, we've made good improvement."
A total of 37 CMU football players had a GPA of 3.00 or better last spring with 19 of them at a 3.50 or higher.
