Volleyball Forced To Five With Oakland

MOUNT PLEASANT--The Central Michigan University volleyball team (10-16, 5-7 Mid-American) beat the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in five games on Tuesday night, but not without a defensive battle brought on by OU.
The game scores were 27-30, 30-20, 30-23, 24-30, and 15-13.
Oakland posted 18 team blocks to Central's nine. Sara Miller led the Oakland blocking unit with two block solos and eight block assists. Setter Becca Saldana tallied eight blocks while Whitney Lane totaled six. Amanda Fowler also picked up six block assists.
For Central, senior Leslie Schroeder (McComb, Ohio) posted one block solo and four block assists. Shaleene Glombowski (Marysville/Jr.) and Kendra DeVries (Fremont/Sr.) grabbed three block assists apiece.
In the dig category, OU scooped up 90 digs to CMU's 96.
Although both teams had comparable hitting percentages (Oakland-.165, Central-.163), the Chippewas 83 kills including 14 kills in game five sealed the match. The Golden Grizzlies totaled 57 kills and only five in the fifth set.
Emily Lovejoy (Traverse City/So.) was credited with her 13th double-double on the season with 19 kills and 11 digs.
DeVries smashed a match-high 20 kills while libero Ali McCrite (New Albany, Ind./Fr.) scooped up a match-high 24 digs.
Melissa Reynolds (Port Huron/Jr.) added a double-double (13 kills, 14 digs) in the win while Tamara Fant (New Baltimore/Fr.) chipped in 15 kills, one block solo and two block assists.
Glombowski was two kills shy of a triple-double with eight kills, 47 assists and 11 digs.
OU's Miller grabbed 13 kills while Fowler and Cortney Varterasian added 10 kills each.
The Chippewas are at home this Friday and Saturday against Western Michigan and Ball State, respectively. Both matches begin at 7 p.m., in Rose Arena.
