LAS VEGAS,Nevada -- Central Michigan University scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to capture a 1-0 win over Portland State in the opening round of the 2002 UNLV Softball Classic here Friday.
It was the first game of the season for both teams.
The Chippewas won the game when Devon Burzynski's foul fly plated Lindsay Horvath from third base with the game's lone run. Horvath started the eighth off at second as part of the international tie-breaker. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Wendy Stephens and then scampered home with the winner of some heads-up baserunning.
Portland State also started the bottom of the eighth with a runner at second but the PSU player was stranded there.
Sophomore Amber Puchalski scattered five hits and fanned 10 batters in claiming the win while PSU's Morgan Seibert allowed just one hit and struck out 10 in the loss.
Central's lone hit came in the fifth when Jennifer Skuta doubled down the left field line. She stole third but was left there.
Coach Margo Jonker's Chippewas will play Oregon at 5 p.m. (PST) in their second outing today.
