p>MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University will have six home football contests on its 12-game schedule in 2002 for the first time since 1990.
In a schedule released today by the Mid-American Conference, the Chippewas will play four non-league contests and eight league outings starting on Thursday, Aug. 29, with a home night game against Sam Houston State and ending on Saturday, Nov. 23, with a home encounter with Western Michigan.
"I'm excited about having six home games," CMU head coach Mike DeBord said. "It's great to have our first two games at home. Hopefully, we can get off to a fast start.
"It's a difficult schedule but I know our players will look forward to the challenges."
The last time CMU had four non-league opponents on the schedule was in 1976. The Chippewas have never had 12 regular-season contests on the docket.
Non-league home opponents for 2002 are Sam Houston State and Wyoming (Sept. 7) while MAC foes coming to Kelly/Shorts Stadium will be Bowling Green (Oct. 12), Marshall (Oct. 26), Ball State (Nov. 16) and Western Michigan (Nov. 23).
CMU's two non-league road tilts will be at Indiana (Sept. 21) and Boston College (Sept. 28).
"That's two outstanding non-conference games," DeBord said. "Indiana is a Big Ten foe and Boston College proved it's a legitimate top 20 team."
