MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Central Michigan softball team is getting the community involved. Not only will the fans have the chance to see top-notch softball at the CMU Softball Complex, but they will have the opportunity to donate to a worthy cause, meet the players and take the field.
Highlighting the schedule of events is Strikeout Cancer Day on April 21. During the doubleheader with Mid-American Conference rival Ohio, everyone will have the opportunity to interact with the team while donating money to the American Cancer Society. Pictures with the team will cost families a $5 donation, adults $3 and kids $2. Children will have the chance to run the bases in between games for $1 while the first five fans to donate $10 will be able to shag fly balls with the team as it warms up to do battle. Fans can also pledge donations based on the number of strikeouts thrown by the Chippewas. Walk-up donations will be taken as well.
Last year, the Chippewas raised $1,800 to help strike out cancer.
Other promotional events on the calendar include the Louisville Slugger Kids Day on April 10 and Senior Citizen Day on April 23. Kids in attendance on April 10 will have the chance to run the bases in between games, get autographs from their favorite players and win prizes while the first 50 kids in attendance will receive a Louisville poster.
Softball athletes will have the chance to thank their parents on Parent Appreciation Day on May 3 while the team will recognize its seniors on May 4.
