Strong Floor Unit Takes Chippewas To Victory

MOUNT PLEASANT--The Central Michigan University gymnastics team (1-0) won its first meet of the season posting a 193.825-192.300 victory over N.C. State (0-1) on Sunday afternoon in Rose Arena.
The Chippewas swept the top-five spots in the floor exercise with an event score of 49.225. Michele Orloski led CMU with a 9.875. Sarah Dame and Kara Reighard each totaled a 9.850 while Sara Burtinsky and Bethany Couturier notched a 9.825.
Dame won the all-around event with a 38.750. N.C. State's Leah Sabo came in second with a 38.500 and Burtinsky finished third with a 38.275.
One of N.C. State's all-arounders, Aimee Panton, went down with a knee injury on the vault. She scored a 9.750 on bars and competed on the vault. She did not return to competition leaving the Wolfpack with five gymnasts to compete on the floor and beam.
The Wolfpack had their best showing on the bars with an event score of 48.875. Four of N.C. State's gymnasts placed in the top-four of the event.
CMU's next best event was the beam posting a 48.325. Couturier placed first on the beam with a 9.875. Tiffany Dykstra made her first appearance for the Maroon and Gold as a redshirt freshman. She placed second on beam with a 9.800.
Two of CMU's freshmen tied for second place on the vault. Stephanie Langley and Mattie Crawford each notched a 9.675.
The Chippewas are at home next Sunday, January 19, against West Virginia. The Mountaineers are ranked No. 21 in the preseseason coaches poll. The meet begins at 2 p.m., in Rose Arena.
