CMU Takes Cardinal Classic, Coach Gets 100th MAC Win

Muncie, Ind.--Head gymnastics coach Jerry Reighard couldn't have picked a better time to get his 100th Mid-American Conference career win.
The Central Michigan University gymnastics team (8-0, 2-0 MAC) went undefeated at the Cardinal Classic hosted by defending MAC champion, Ball State, on Friday night.
CMU won the meet with a score of 193.200. Ball State placed second with a 192.975 while Southeast Missouri State (192.425), Northern Illinois (192.300), Winona State (185.450), UW-Oshkosh (180.950), and UW-Stout (174.900) followed.
Sophomore Sara Burtinsky paced the Chippewas by taking second in the all-around with a 38.875. She took third on bars (9.800), tied for ninth on beam (9.725), placed ninth on vault (9.650), and finished 15th on floor (9.700).
CMU's strongest event was the vault with a season-high team score of 48.400. Michele Orloski won the vault with a 9.775. Mattie Crawford and Kara Reighard tied for seventh with a 9.675 while Bethany Couturier posted a 9.625 and Stephanie Langley notched a 9.600.
Senior Sarah Dame gave a strong performance on three events. She posted a 9.825 on floor (tied for third), 9.700 on bars (seventh), and 9.775 (tied for sixth).
Couturier tied for first on bars with a 9.825 and Reighard placed fourth with a 9.775. Tiffany Dykstra tied for third on the beam (9.800).
Ashley Godwin of Southeast Missouri State won the all-around with a 39.025. Kristina Campos of Northern Illinois took third with a 38.825.
The Chippewas are at the Michigan Classic in East Lansing on February 2. The meet begins at 4:30 p.m. Other teams include Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Michigan, and Michigan State.
