MOUNT PLEASANT - Powered by Tony Bowne's career-high 18 points, the Central Michigan University men's basketball team moved into a share of first place in the Mid-American Conference West Division here Saturday afternoon with an 88-71 win over Bowling Green.
The Chippewas, still undefeated in eight games in Rose Arena, are now 13-5 for the season and 6-3 in MAC action. The Falcons dropped out of the first place in the West with a 6-4 league mark. BG is 10-8 overall.
Bowne, the 6-3 sophomore from Hastings, drilled a career-high four three-pointers and was seven-of-nine from the field. He also had five rebounds and two assists.
CMU raced out to a 37-23 lead at the half and built it to as many as 31 points in the seconds half at 78-47 with 9:20 to play before the Falcons started to fight back. But, it was too little too late as the closest the Falcons could get was 16 points, 87-71, with 1:31 to play.
Bowne had plenty of help from his Chippewa teammates with three other players reaching double digits. Chris Kaman had 21 points to go along with 14 rebounds and six blocks while Mike Manciel had 20 points and seven caroms. J.R. Wallace was also in twin figures with 11.
BG sophomore John Reimold captured game-scoring laurels with 24 points while 6-10 junior Kevin Netter added 16.
The Chippewas were on the money from the field, nailing 31-of-58 for 53.4 percent. The Falcons were 26-of-64 for 40.6 percent. CMU held a 38-33 edge in rebounding but committed one more turnover, 17-16.
