HENDERSON, Nev. -- A two-run sixth inning broke a tie game as Hawaii posted a 3-1 win over Central Michigan University in the UNLV Classic on Friday night under the lights. CMU falls to 1-3 while the Wahine improve to 4-5.
After Hawaii scored first, CMU bounced back to tie the score in the fourth. But, a leadoff single and an error proved costly for CMU in the sixth.
Hawaii got on the board in the second with a leadoff home run to right center field by first sacker Stacey Porter.
After stranding runners in scoring position in the second and third innings, the Chippewas tied it with an unearned run in the fourth. Christin Sobeck singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sobeck headed to third on a ground out by Kristen White and then scored when Ari Ault hit a grounder third that was misplayed by the Wahine fielder.
Hawaii rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the victory. April Crowell doubled to left to start the inning and then the Chippewas intentionally walked Porter who homered earlier in the game. An RBI single by Kate Judd gave the Wahine a one-run advantage and then a routine fly was dropped by the Chippewas in left field which allowed a second insurance run to score.
Jenni Rasmussen took the loss, throwing 5.0 innings and allowing six hits and three runs (two earned). She faced three batters in the sixth before Amber Puchalski came on in relief.
CMU had five hits and one error in the game while Hawaii had six hits and an error.
Michelle Brander was 2-for-3 with a double and Karly McCormack also added a double for CMU. Ari Ault led off the top of the seventh with a single.
Shannon Tabion went the distance to pick up the win for Hawaii. She struck out eight and walked just two. Crowell and Judd each had two hits for Hawaii.
The Chippewas close the UNLV Classic on Sunday with a game against No. 7-ranked LSU at 9 a.m., local time.
