MOUNT PLEASANT -- A solid pitching performance from freshman Jessica Garvin and a key piece of hitting in the first inning by senior Michelle Brander gave Central Michigan University a 1-0 win over Bowling Green State University on Sunday in Mount Pleasant.
CMU swept the three-game home series against the Falcons with three shutouts. The Chippewas have now won 28 straight against BGSU.
Garvin, a redshirt freshman, went five and two-thirds scoreless innings in the circle, allowing just two hits. After giving up a double to BGSU's Gina Rango in the sixth, ace Amber Puchalski was brought in to pick up the save. Puchalski went one and a third innings and struck out three while not allowing a hit. It was Garvin's first career MAC win and improved her record to 2-2 on the year. Puchalski's save was her second of the season.
CMU scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first. Freshman Karen Hohs walked to start the inning and she later stole second. Hohs advanced to third on a ground out to short by Brittany Decker and then came home on an RBI single to right by CMU's leading hitter, Brander.
The Chippewas tallied seven hits in the game, two each by Decker and Sarah Hamilton.
Liz Vrabel took the loss for Bowling Green. She went the distance, striking out six and walking three. CMU's lone run was earned.
Next up for the Chippewas is a home doubleheader on Tuesday, April 1, against Oakland University. The twinbill begins at 2 p.m.
