KALAMAZOO -- The Central Michigan University softball team surrendered only one hit to Western Michigan on Sunday afternoon. But, it was all the Broncos needed as they topped the Chippewas in Kalamazoo, 1-0.
Angie Fiero lifted the Broncos to victory when she hit a solo homerun to center with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. CMU hurler Jenni Rasmussen had a no-hitter going until that point. Fiero was the only Bronco to tap Rasmussen for a hit on the afternoon.
The Chippewas, who now fall to 19-11 and 8-4 in Mid-American Conference play, tapped Jaymie Voss for three hits. Two of them came in the first inning when Michelle Brander and Karly McCormack posted back-to-back hits. But, CMU couldn't capitalize with two runners on base.
CMU rallied in its final at bat when Brander got on board on a single to short. However, McCormack hit into a double play on a sacrifice attempt. Aimee Smith then reached base on an error and Sarah Hamilton was subsequently hit by a pitch. However, Voss stymied the Chippewa offense, who left both runners stranded, and escaped with the shutout victory.
The Chippewas will hit the road on Wednesday, April 16, to play at Michigan State. First pitch in East Lansing is set for 4 p.m. CMU will then host Buffalo for a three-game series on April 18-19. The two will play a doubleheader on Friday, starting at 3:30 p.m., and a single game on Sunday, slated to start at 1 p.m. All home games are at the CMU Softball Complex.
