ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Central Michigan University reached one of its goals in women's basketball here Thursday night with a 62-46 win over St. Louis University.
The win gave the Chippewas a winning record entering the Mid-American Conference season at 6-5. The Billikens fall to 1-11.
CMU opens league play at home on Wednesday, Jan. 5, with a game against arch-rival Western Michigan University at 7 p.m.
St. Louis jumped out to a 5-2 lead with 16:20 to go in the first half before the Chippewas went on a 17-4 run to take a 19-9 lead at the 6:37 mark. CMU led 30-13 at the half thanks in large part to sophomore Sharonda Hurd's 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Hurd finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds while redshirt freshman Dana Westover also posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Ann Skufca nearly did the same with eight points and 10 rebunds.
Needless to say, the Chippewas held a wide edge in rebounding, 53-40. However, they also committed 24 turovers to 12 for the Billikens.
St. Louis shot a woeful 21 percent from the field on 14-of-68 compared to 42 percent for CMU on 23-of-55.
The Billikens' Mia Johnson, averaging 19.3 points per game, had just 10 thanks to a 3-for-23 from the field. Marquita McFarland also had 10. Krystle Hatton led St. Louis with 10 rebounds.
