Broncos Roll Past Chippewas, 86-55

KALAMAZOO -- The Central Michigan University Chippewas coughed up the ball 24 times and had one of their worst collective shooting nights of the season in an 86-55 loss at rival Western Michigan on Wednesday night.
CMU's starters combined for 16 turnovers and the team shot 39 percent (20-for-52) from the floor, 25 percent (5-for-20) from three-point range and 53 percent (10-for-19) from the line in its worst conference loss this season.
With WMU's win and Wednesday losses by Kent State and Toledo, the Broncos (21-3, 13-2 MAC) won the Mid-American Conference West Division title outright and are now tied for the overall MAC lead with KSU. CMU dropped to 5-21, 1-14 in league action.
Kevin Nelson was the lone Chippewa in double figures with 12 points. Senior Gerrit Brigitha had nine points, as did both Sefton Barrett and David Hoskins off the bench. Barrett added a team-high seven rebounds.
Four Bronco players were in twin figures with Mike Williams leading the way with 19 points and eight boards. Levi Rost had 18 points and a team-high nine rebounds off the bench.
The Broncos shot 50 percent from the floor (30-for-60) and 45 percent from three-point range (9-for-20). WMU held a 41-31 lead on the glass.
CMU scored the first two points of the game but Western then went on a 13-0 run. Hoskins ended the run with a bucket but the Chippewas would trail by double digits the rest of the game. The 31-point final margin matched the Broncos largest lead of the game.
CMU is idle until traveling to Northern Illinois on Monday, March 1. Tipoff in DeKalb, Ill., is set for 8 p.m. EST (7 p.m. CST). After that the Chippewas close the regular season with home dates against Toledo (March 3) and Ball State (March 6).
