ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Central Michigan University softball team added two wins at the Rebel Games in Orlando, Fla., this afternoon. The Chippewas edged Providence College, 7-6 in eight innings, and shut out Gardner-Webb in game two, 8-0.
The Chippewas (6-4 overall) needed eight innings and the international tie-breaker rule to slip past PC, scoring two runs in the fifth and one in the eighth.
Jill DeRoche got the start versus Providence but Amber Puchalski came on in relief to pickup her fourth win this season. She fanned three Friar batters. Christin Sobeck led the Maroon and Gold at the plate with a three-hit performance. Two of them were triples.
CMU held a 4-2 lead after four innings but the Friars tied it up in the top of the fifth. The Chippewas responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning but Providence posted a pair on the board in the top of the seventh to tie it again. The tie-breaker rule was used in the eighth and Karen Hohs was placed on second base to start the inning. She was sacrificed to third and Christan Dhondt drove in the winning run with a single.
CMU mercied Gardner-Webb in the nightcap thanks to a three-hit shutout by Jessica Garvin. She whiffed one batter.
Aimee Smith tallied two hits for the Chippewas, one of them a double, while Sobeck homered to help the cause.
Play continues at the Rebel Games as the Chippewas play St. Bonaventure and Virginia Tech tomorrow. The first game is slated to start at 8:50 a.m.
