MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University's 14-game Mid-American Conference winning streak came to a halt on Wednesday when the Chippewas committed four errors in a 6-1 loss to rival Western Michigan in game one of a doubleheader. CMU rebounded to take the nightcap, 2-0, thanks to a one-hit shutout thrown by Jessica Garvin.
The Chippewas are now 27-14 overall and 16-2 in MAC play. WMU stays in second place in the MAC West Division behind CMU at 26-21 overall and 13-7 in the league.
Western Michigan controlled the entire first game as pitcher Laura Stewart fanned 10 Chippewa batters without a walk while allowing just four hits.
The Broncos scored a run in the second inning and then four runs in the fifth on four hits and a pair of Chippewa errors.
WMU chased CMU starter Amber Puchalski who was looking to set the MAC record for career wins. However, she suffered her first league loss of the year, dropping to 17-7 overall on the season. Puchalski went four and a third innings giving up four hits and five runs, but only one run was earned. She fanned eight.
Jill DeRoche came on in relief and allowed four hits in her two and two-thirds innings of relief.
The Chippewas scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth when Brittany Decker hit a solo homer to left field. WMU tacked on another run in the seventh for a five-run margin.
In the nightcap, Garvin took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before giving up an infield single to WMU's Jaymie Voss. That was the only hit the Broncos could muster as Garvin fanned five en route to her second straight MAC shutout.
Garvin improved to 8-5 while Voss took the loss in the circle for WMU to drop to 4-7.
CMU scored once in the second and once in the fourth.
Stephanie Crews had a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the second. After a leadoff double by Christan Dhondt in the fourth, Brittany Decker plated Dhondt with an RBI single to left field.
The Chippewas tallied eight hits in the nightcap while the Broncos had trouble in the field with three errors.
Aimee Smith and Christin Sobeck were each 2-for-2 in the nightcap while Christan Dhondt was 2-for-3.
The Chippewas now travel to Ball State this weekend for a three-game series. Friday's single game will begin at 3:30 p.m., and Saturday's twinbill is set to start at 1 p.m.
NOTES:
* Christin Sobeck's nine-game hitting streak came to an end in game one.
* With Brittany Decker's homer in game one, CMU has now belted nine homers in its last 12 games. CMU has 18 on the year, four short of tying the CMU single season team record.
