CMU Loses to Bowling Green, 11-10

MOUNT PLEASANT - In a marathon nine-inning baseball game that took three hours and 55 minutes to play, Bowling Green State University claimed an 11-10 win over Central Michigan University here Saturday.
The game featured 25 hits (15 by CMU) and 21 walks (13 by Chippewa hurlers).
BG is now 12-5 for the season and 3-2 in Mid-American Conference play while CMU is 11-13 and 1-1 in loop action.
Bowling Green took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Eric Lawson slugged his second homer of the season to left.
However, the Chippewas countered with two unearned runs in the bottom of the first. Eric Cannon walked and was safe at second on an error with Jim Geldhof going to first. Kurtis Wells then singled in one run and Bryan Mitzel singled in another.
CMU upped its lead to 3-1 in the second when J.T. Jones singled, went to second on a walk to Derek Schaller, took third on a sacrifice bunt by Chase Welker and scored on an infield bouncer by Jeremy Crum.
The Chippewas scored another run in the third to make it 4-1. Geldhof and Wells singled to open the inning with Geldhof scoring on a sacrifice fly by Jones.
The Falcons cut the deficit to one run in the fifth, 4-3, with Lawson's second homer of the game, a two-run shot to left.
CMU got the two back in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer to right by Mitzel, also plating Geldhof who had singled. It was Mitzel's sixth home run of the season.
BG busted loose for six runs on just three hits in the top of the sixth to grab a 9-6. The Falcons took advantage of three walks and a hit batsman to regain the lead.
The Chippewas got three runs back in the bottom of the sixth to knot the game at 9-9. Geldhof's triple scored Cannon and then Geldhof raced home on a double by Wells. A sac fly off the bat of Jones scored Wells with the tying marker.
CMU regained the lead in the seventh with a single run on a bloop single down the left field line off the bat of Geldhof. The hit scored Crum who reached on a one-out walk and moved to third on a single by Cannon.
BG tied it up at 10-10 in the eighth on a run-scoring double by Spencer Schmitz. CMU's David LeMieux came on in relief and closed the door.
The Falcons took the lead up the top of the ninth, 11-10, when David Barkholz walked, was balked to second and scored on Lawson's double to right.
The two teams are set to play here again in Sunday in the final game of the series at 1 p.m.
