Chippewas collect 14 hits in run-rule victory in the opener; Knowlton's 10th-inning RBI single lifts Chippewas to nightcap win
The Chippewas collected 14 hits en route to a 15-5 win in the opener, and Zach Knowlton's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave CMU a 4-3 win in the nightcap as the Chippewas posted a Mid-American Conference baseball doubleheader sweep of Ohio on Friday on Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
CMU extended its MAC win streak to four games in improving to 9-11 in league play and 16-19 overall. The Chippewas and Bobcats close their three-game series on Saturday (1 p.m.).
"I thought we played good, clean baseball pretty much majority of the day," CMU coach Jake Sabol said.
Both games ended in walk-off fashion.
Joey Milto's one-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning of game 1 extended CMU's lead to 15-5 and ended it on the 10-run rule.
In the nightcap, CMU trailed, 3-1, then scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie it and send it to extra innings.
Logan Keilen doubled to lead off the CMU 10th, and then pinch runner Dominic Bouscher raced home from second when Knowlton slapped a single on a 1-0 pitch to right-center field.
The Chippewas finally got the sweet taste of a comeback victory after so often this season being on the losing side of such a game.
A win on Saturday would give CMU its first MAC sweep of the season.
"We haven't gotten many of these," Sabol said. "We've been on the wrong end of that way too many times. It feels good to do it somebody else.
"I want them to enjoy the heck out of it. But when they go to sleep tonight, it's on to tomorrow. Every game right now is the biggest game of the season. So it's just about trying to come loose (on Saturday), realize we've got something in front of us that we've got to go accomplish, and do everything we can to go do it."
Cameron Niehaus (2-1) went the final 2 1/3 innings for the win in game 2. He walked one and struck out one and did not allow a hit.
CMU starter Hayden Bailey allowed two runs on three hits, walked three and struck out three. Jack Potteiger went 2 2/3 frames in relief, surrendering one run on four hits.
Drew Loikits singled to lead off the ninth and went to third on a Miguel Correa Jr. double. Loikits scored on a Bryson Webb single and then Harrison Bowman delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the game, 3-3.
Cole Prout drove in four runs and Keilen and Correra drove in three apiece in the opener. The Chippewas collected 14 hits, 11 of them singles, which was key with the strong wind blowing in at Theunissen.
"In game one, the offense was ready to go from the get-go," Sabol said. "We did a lot of things really well. We're not going to hit the ball off the fence or over the wall; you've got to apply pressure in different ways. We kind of singled them to death and created pressure. We just manufactured runs in different ways than we have in the past."
The Chippewas scored two runs in the first inning and extended their lead to 6-0 with a four-run third.
After Ohio cut its deficit to 6-3 with three runs in the fourth, the Chippewas immediately answered with three in the bottom half of the frame and then tacked on four more in the fifth.
CMU starter Tyson Potts (2-2) allowed five runs on 10 hits and struck out four over 6 2/3 innings for the win. He walked just one.
