Baseball Falters Late in Series-Finale Loss to Ohio

Chipppewas take series, remain in the hunt in MAC race
The Chippewas, who swept a doubleheader from the Bobcats on Friday, won the series. They are 16-20, 9-12 MAC with four series remaining.
CMU has two midweek nonleaguers – the first at Oakland on Tuesday, the second at home against Rochester Christian on Wednesday – and then goes to Miami (Ohio) for a three-game MAC series next weekend.
The Chippewas have won their last three league series and head into the Miami series attempting to move into the top six in the conference standings.
The top six teams in the league earn a berth in the league tournament and as of Saturday night, the Chippewas were 3 ½ games behind Toledo, which holds the sixth spot.
CMU has four league series – 12 conference games – remaining, and little room for error.
"We've got some ground to make up," CMU coach Jake Sabol said. "The goal is to win every game, obviously. If you can win the weekend and snag a few of the games that maybe you're not supposed to, you usually put yourself in a good situation there. We've got four big (series) left.
"We know we've got to play really well. We know there's a lot of confusion at the top of the standings where those (teams) have got to play each other too.
"Obviously, a series win is great and it just stacks on another good weekend for us. But when you get later in the year, every game is so darned important that sometimes it takes away from the overall weekend, unfortunately."
Saturday's game was tied, 3-3, when the wheels fell off for CMU in the top of the seventh inning when Ohio scored eight runs on six hits.
Jared Hanson relieved CMU starter Gavin Moczydlewski to open the inning. The Bobcats touched up Hanson for five runs on two hits – the big blow was a three-run homer – and two walks and a hit batter. The homer gave the Bobcats an 8-3 lead.
Ohio got another homer in the inning, this one a two-run blast off Nate Ross, before Ross worked out of the jam by getting a flyout with the bases loaded.
When the dust settled, Ohio held an 11-3 lead.
Hanson (2-3) took the loss. The Chippewas used seven pitchers. Moczydlowsky allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out four and walking five over six innings.
CMU leadoff hitter Bryson Webb remained hot with three hits, while Cole Prout also finished with three hits. CMU finished with 12 hits.
