Keilen Homers to Lead 14-Hit Attack as Baseball Tops Oakland

Stumpf throws 4 solid innings in relief for the win; Chippewas return home Wednesday for nonleague game
It was the Chippewas' sixth win in their last eight games as they improved to 17-20. They entertain Rochester Christian on Wednesday (3 p.m.) in a nonleague game on Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium and then go to Miami (Ohio) for a Mid-American Conference series this weekend.
"We talked about that there's no missed opportunities from here on out," CMU coach Jake Sabol said. "We've got a bunch of games left, and every one of them are championship-caliber games for us. Weekend games, mid-week games, they all mean something for us in some way, shape or form.
"This was just step No. 1 and we started off the week off strong, and now let's go do it again tomorrow."
The Chippewas finished with 14 hits, seven of them for extra bases, on Tuesday, their fifth consecutive game in which they have reached double digits in hits.
Cole Prout doubled twice and drove in three runs, Drew Loikits had three hits including a double and drove in two runs, and Zach Knowlton singled and tripled.
The Chippewas scored at least one run in every inning except the fifth and the eighth, and had at least one baserunner in every inning.
"It was a good day for the offense," Sabol said. "They scored early, they scored in multiple innings, they scored in different ways, but they've been doing that. It was good to see those guys continue to do what they've been doing, putting pressure on the defense pretty much every inning which was important for us to continue to tack on runs because (Oakland) was fighting back too. We needed to continue to extend our lead when we had the chances."
Brady Krzciok and Keilen each had an RBI single in the first inning to stake the Chippewas to a 2-0 lead. They never trailed.
Keilen's homer, a two-run shot to center field in the sixth, was his fourth of the season.
Liam Stumpf (2-1) went the final four innings in relief for the victory. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out two. It was his longest outing of the season.
"He had zero free passes in four innings," Sabol said. "He was all over the zone and he needs to be that kind of guy out of the pen down the stretch. That was really good to see him get back on it and fill it up for us.
"We know with double mid-week (games) we need all the arms we can get heading into the weekend so for him to settle in and pound the zone and force contact was great for us. That was probably the major reason we were able to keep the lead and allow our offense to continue to extend it. It was really good to see."
Chippewa starter Jack Griffiths surrendered five runs on six hits. Kenny Keller threw 1/3 of an inning in relief, getting a strikeout to end the fifth inning and leave the bases loaded and preserve the Chippewas' 7-5 lead.
