Chippewas look to big weekend MAC series at Miami (Ohio)
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan collected 12 hits and got a solid mound performance from three pitchers on Wednesday as the Chippewas topped Rochester Christian, 11-1, in a nonconference baseball game on Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
The win was the Chippewas' seventh in their last nine starts and second of the week after an 11-6 nonleague win at Oakland on Tuesday.
They are 18-20 and take a 9-12 Mid-American Conference record into a big league series at Miami (Ohio) this weekend.
The RedHawks are 26-13 and are tied for second at 14-7 in the MAC. CMU is seventh and four games behind two teams, Ball State and Toledo, which are tied for sixth. The top six teams earn a berth in the league tournament.
Miami is 12-2 at home and leads the MAC in both home runs (62) and team batting average (.304). CMU is second in the league with a .296 team batting average and is third in home runs.
"It'll be fun, they should be excited about this weekend," CMU coach Jake Sabol said of his players. "Miami's playing really well. It'll be a great environment. I know the guys are excited to get themselves back in the mix.
"Two really good offenses going at each other. They play really good offense, especially at home. They're a much different team at home than they are on the road, so we'll have our hands full.
"I just want our guys to ride what they're doing. We don't need to get into panic mode; we don't need to (be up and down) throughout the course of the games. If they just stick to what they've been doing all year, we're going to be in the games late, I know that, but we'll talk about that as we get closer. I just want them to enjoy the heck out of this one, get prepared in the scouting report meetings when we get down there and just get ready to go compete."
Cole Prout and Spencer Verburg had three hits apiece as CMU posted its fifth consecutive double-digit hit total on Wednesday against Rochester Christian (17-26).
Verburg had an RBI single to trigger an eight-run CMU fourth inning during which Verburg and Prout both belted a two-run single, and Logan Keilen had a two-run double.
The Chippewas ended it on the run rule in the bottom of the seventh Jonathan Fleaka's one-out RBI single.
Reliever Jake Brown (1-0) held the Warriors scoreless over the final four innings for the win. He struck out five and surrendered four hits but did not walk a batter.
It was the second solid bullpen performance for the Chippewas in the last two days. Liam Stumpf went the final four frames without walking a batter in CMU's Tuesday win at Oakland.
"Jake is a junior and we would hope we would have seen that a few more times throughout his career," Sabol said. "We keep wanting to run him out there because he has the stuff to help us; he's had some moments, this being one of them.
"I'm just waiting for him to do it twice. When you do it twice, now you've got some confidence and you go do it a third time. Especially with relief pitching, you need to know what you're going to get when guys come in the game. He was good today. He got ahead, didn't have any free passes, and that's what you need. That's why you keep the lead and then you can tack on."
