OXFORD, Ohio – Central Michigan pitching surrendered 13 hits and issued seven walks on Friday as the Chippewas dropped a 12-5 decision to Miami (Ohio) in the opener of a three-game Mid-American Conference series at the RedHawks' Hayden Park.

The loss dropped CMU to 18-21, 9-13 MAC. The teams play game 2 of their series on Saturday (1 p.m.) and close the series on Sunday (1 p.m.).

CMU led, 1-0, when Miami (27-13, 15-7) scored three runs in the second inning, tying the game on a bases-loaded walk followed by a two-run single.

Miami never relinquished the lead, scoring three runs in the fourth and fifth innings and three more in the eighth.

Trailing 9-4 in the eighth, the Chippewas scored a run when Spencer Verburg was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to pull CMU to 9-5 and bring the tying run to the plate with none out.

Austin Berggren came on in relief and recorded three consecutive strikeouts to end the threat.

Harrison Bowman and Verberg hit back-to-back home runs for the Chippewas in the sixth inning. It was Bowman's team-leading 10^th round-tripper of the season and Verburg's fourth.

CMU starter Tyson Potts (2-3) allowed six runs on four hits, walked five and struck out three over 3 1/3 innings in taking the loss. Jack Potteiger and Jared Hanson pitched in relief.

Miami starter Zac Sohosky (6-1) allowed four runs in five hits over seven innings for the win. Berggren earned the save, his fourth.
