OXFORD, Ohio – Central Michigan was held to five hits by two Miami (Ohio) pitchers on Saturday as the RedHawks handed the Chippewas a 6-1 loss in the second game of a Mid-American Conference baseball series at Miami's Hayden Park.
The loss, CMU's second of the weekend, dropped the Chippewas to 18-22, 9-14 MAC. Miami, which has won eight of its last nine games, improved to 28-13, 16-7.
The series finale is set for Sunday (1 p.m.).
Zach Knowlton led the Chippewas with two hits and Spencer Verburg had a pinch-hit double in the ninth inning.
Knowlton drove in CMU's lone run with a fourth-inning single that tied the game, 1-1.
Miami went ahead on a Tommy Harrison three-run homer in the fifth.
Chippewa starter Hayden Bailey allowed four runs on three hits, struck out two and walked four over six innings. Liam Stumpf worked the final two innings in relief. Stumpf surrendered two runs on three hits.
Carson Byers went the final six innings in relief for the win. He allowed one run on four hits, struck out eight, and did not issue a walk. Miami starter Alex Gay surrendered one hit and struck out four over three frames.
