Field Hockey Falls to Louisville, 4-1

EAST LANSING - The Central Michigan University field hockey team fell to Louisville on Saturday afternoon, 4-1.
The Chippewas fall to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the Mid-American Conference with Louisville improving to 3-6 and 1-1 in conference. The match was played in East Lansing at the Michigan State field hockey complex.
The Cardinals opened the scoring just over two minutes into the match with an unassisted goal by Kimberly Hughes. CMU answered two minutes later with a goal from Alicia Balanesi. A pass from Stasia Burroughs, who notched her team-leading third assist of the season, created the goal.
Louisville retook the lead in the 22nd minute with another unassisted goal, this time by Jessica Javelet. The Cardinals extended its lead with less than four minutes to go in the first half. Louisville's Casey Diener and Missy Briery got free for a two on one breakaway with Briery diving to tip into the net a pass from Diener.
Louisville added an insurance goal with a little over three minutes to go in the match when Javelet scored her second goal of the match, assisted by Jen Payne.
The Cardinals finished with the advantage in shots and penalty corners. They had 19 shots compared to eight for CMU and had five corners with CMU notching three.
CMU goalkeeper Sarah Mancuso made 10 saves in the loss with Cardinal keeper Marie-Claire Heller making six saves to earn the victory.
The Chippewas head on the road next weekend for a pair of matches. CMU plays at MAC foe Ball State on Saturday at 1 p.m. It then travels to Ohio State, the alma mater of head coach Cristy Freese, for a match on Sunday at 2 p.m.
