MOUNT PLEASANT -- Senior Emily Lovejoy recorded a career-high 36 kills but it wasn't enough as the Central Michigan University volleyball team fell to Indiana State, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon in CMU's Super 8 Invitational.
Game scores were 26-30, 30-25, 33-35, 30-23 and 15-13.
The Chippewas appeared to be in the driver's seat after winning a tight game three by reaching 35 first as it went to extra points. However, ISU came back to even the match with a game four victory and then used five blocks in the finale to escape with a narrow two-point victory.
CMU posted a .308 hitting percentage through the first three games but the offense got off track hitting .000 in each of the last two with 19 kills to 19 hitting errors.
Indiana State, on the other hand, had a .249 attack percentage for the match while the Chippewas finished at .197.
Lovejoy's 36 kills came with a .420 hitting percentage and 16 digs.
Aislinn Hayes tallied 13 kills and a pair of blocks for CMU and Meghan Moore notched 12 kills, two aces and three blocks (one solo).
Indiana State had four players with a double-figure kill total, including Tessa Wolf with 18 and Brittanie Stowell with 15 and seven block assists.
CMU's defense was led by Ali McCrite's 22 digs while setter Courtney Kersten totalled 62 assists and 11 digs.
The Sycamores outblocked CMU, 13-10, with sophomore Melanie Klein leading the Chippewas with six block assists.
Action continues at the Super 8 Invitational on Saturday evening as ISU faces Wisconsin-Green Bay at 4:30 p.m., and CMU hosts IUPUI at 7 p.m.
