In the preseason poll released today, Central Michigan University has been chosen to repeat as the Mid-American Conference gymnastics champions. The Chippewas have also been chosen to share the 2005 conference tournament title with Kent State.
Central Michigan finished the 2004 season with a 21-3 record overall and a 6-0 record in the MAC. The Chippewas, champions of the Mid-American Conference 10 times under head coach Jerry Reighard, return nine letterwinners to this year's team. Among those nine is Sara Burtinsky (Sr., AA), who advanced to the NCAA Championship last season. Along with Burtinsky, Stephanie Langley (Jr., AA) and Kara Reighard (Sr., AA) are returning All-MAC first team selections. Jules Passy (So., AAA) was an All-MAC second team selection.
Kent State (11-2, 5-1 MAC) was picked to finish second in the regular season. Eastern Michigan, led by "2004 Freshman of the Year," Rebecca Fuss, takes third in the preseason coaches poll.
Rounding out the rest of the preseason poll are Bowling Green at fourth, Northern Illinois selected fifth, Western Michigan in at sixth, and finishing seventh is Ball State University.
The 2005 MAC Gymnastics Championship will take place in DeKalb, Illinois on Friday, March 25.
