AKRON, Ohio - Akron hits its first five three-point attempts and never looked back in a 95-56 home win over Central Michigan University on Saturday night in J.A.R. Arena.
The Zips finished the game with 15 treys on 54 percent shooting from the arc.
CMU falls to 7-9 overall, 2-6 in the Mid-American Conference while Akron improves to 11-5, 5-3 in the MAC, including a perfect 8-0 at home.
Akron held a 19-12 lead six minutes into the game and then the Zips rattled off a 17-0 run over 6:22 stretch to push the margin to 24 points.
After trailing at the break, 52-29, CMU opened the second half on an 8-0 run to cut it to 52-37. However, that was as close as the Chippewas would get the rest of the way.
Kevin Nelson led CMU with 17 points, including four three-pointers. He scored 16 in the first half but was 0-5 in the second. Nelson was the only Chippewa in double-figures as Eddie Spencer added nine points and Robert Sevalia seven and five assists. Sefton Barrett had a team-high seven rebounds.
Three Akron players hit double figures, including freshman Bubba Walther's game-high 18.
CMU shot just .345 from the floor compared to Akron's .586 mark and the Chippewas were outrebounded 35-25. Akron shot a scorching .677 from the floor in the first half.
The Chippewas return home on Wednesday, Jan. 26, to host Bowling Green at 7 p.m.
