KALAMAZOO - The Central Michigan University women's soccer team let one slip away here this afternoon, allowing two goals in the second half to archrival Western Michigan to lose the match, 2-1. WMU scored the match-winning goal after it intercepted a goal kick at the top of the box and fired a low shot past CMU keeper Anne Decker into the net. CMU falls to 6-7-2 overall, 5-2-1 in the Mid-American Conference, and drops five points behind Western in the standings with just three league matches remaining. Western is now 9-5-1 on the year and 7-1-0 in the MAC.
"This was a disappointing loss today," head coach Tony DiTucci said. "We played like two different teams today. In the second half, we stopped doing the things that were successful for us, and we seemed to play not to lose rather than to win. We can't have the letdowns that we had today and expect to be able to overcome them and win."
The two teams played very evenly, with CMU holding a slight edge in shots, 17-15, and WMU holding a slight edge in shots on goal, 8-5. Sarah Burns scored CMU's goal with just over a minute remaining in the first half to give CMU a 1-0 at the half. Katy Boggan and Rosamaria Rago picked up the assists. Western scored twice in a nine-minute span to erase the deficit and take the lead. The Chippewas couldn't come up with a goal to tie the match in the final minutes.
"Both teams had their chances today, but we didn't convert on enough of ours and Western did," DiTucci said.
CMU now must regroup and get ready for two home matches this coming weekend. The first of those two matches will be on Friday, Oct. 21, when CMU entertains Bowling Green. The match with the Falcons starts at 3 p.m.
