YPSILANTI - The Mid-American Conference's regular season came to a disappointing end for the Central Michigan University women's soccer team as it fell here to Eastern Michigan, 4-1. The Eagles scored three second half goals to snap a 1-1 halftime tie and surge ahead of CMU in the MAC standings. The Chippewas finish the regular season at 5-4-2 in the MAC, 6-9-3 overall, and earn the No. 6 seed in the upcoming MAC Women's Soccer Championship, which begins on Tuesday, Nov. 1. EMU moved to 6-5-0 in the MAC, 8-10-1 overall, and moved from eighth place to fifth place in the standings.
CMU dominated the first half statistically, outshooting EMU 9-2, but the score was tied 1-1 after 45 minutes. Michele Lawrence gave Eastern the lead in the 17th minute with her ninth goal of the season, but the Chippewas tied it in the 42nd minute on an unassisted goal from junior forward Jacquie Lacek, her second of the season. Lawrence struck again 12 minutes into the second half, netting her second of the game and conference-leading 10th of the year to give the Eagles a lead they would never relinquish. Trisha Roberts and Cyndi Mullins added goals later in the half to provide the final margin.
Anne Decker made just two saves and took the loss for CMU. The Chippewas outshot EMU 15-8 in the match, while Eastern held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. EMU goalkeeper Sara Schiffbauer made six saves for the Eagles in the win.
Both teams now advance on to play in the MAC Tournament. Central Michigan, as the No. 6 seed, will travel to play No. 3 seed Western Michigan in Kalamazoo on Tuesday, Nov. 1. No. 5 seed Eastern Michigan will travel to Oxford, Ohio to play No. 4 seed Miami. Bowling Green won the regular-season title and earned the No. 1 seed, and it will play No. 8 seed Toledo. The other first-round match pits No. 7 seed Kent State against No. 2 seed Ball State.
Game times for all four first-round matches will be announced later.
