MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University head football coach Brian Kelly answers fans' questions on a variety of topics, including the focus of the recruiting season and how the competition to replace Kent Smith at quarterback shapes up.
Why are the shovel pass and bubble screens so prominent in your offense? Does it depend on what you see on film, or are they just plays you prefer?
Dan
Ubly, MI
Coach Kelly: It's primarily a function of us not being in a two-back set the majority of the time. If you look at the ways teams have defended us and the spread, they often will add more people to the box. Those plays take advantage of how defenses typically align against the spread.
With recruiting season upon us, what areas will you be focusing on in recruiting?
Timothy
Jackson, MI
Coach Kelly: Cornerbacks and safeties. We have 17 scholarships to offer this year, and as many as 50 percent of those could be used on corners and safeties. If we are going to continue to improve as a football team, that is an area that needs serious attention.
Coach, now that Kent Smith is gone, who is going to take over the starting job next year for the Chippewas?
Kyle
Kalamazoo, MI
Coach Kelly: All four of our returning quarterbacks (Brian Brunner, Duane Brooks, Dan LeFevour, Sean Price) will have an equal opportunity in spring practice. It's going to be a challenge, but it's one that I am looking forward to. We may or may not have a starter following spring ball, but we need to find out who can run our offense in 2006.
I played with Daniel Bazuin at McBain High School. He was an excellent tight end as well as linebacker. Will you get him involved in a goal line situation at tight end or possibly in the backfield? I'd love to see him score once during his career at CMU.
Daryl
McBain, MI
Coach Kelly: Actually, we are considering it. We have a goal line package that we're looking at that may include Dan or Red Keith. We're inverstigating every opportunity to put the right players on the field to help our team be successful.
