RENO, Nev. - Sophomore Wynn Michalak claimed an individual title at 197 pounds and senior Mark DiSalvo was second at 149 to lead the 10th-ranked Central Michigan University wrestling team to a runner-up finish at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday.
Oklahoma State claimed three individual titles and scored 194.5 team points to win the team championship. CMU finished second with 123 points, while Northwestern was third with 118.5.
Michalak, ranked fourth nationally and seeded second at 197 pounds, won five straight matches to claim the title. He upset unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Jake Rosholt of Oklahoma State, 5-1, in the championship match. Now 14-0 on the year, Michalak won his first two matches of the day by pin, scored a technical fall over Oregon's Tony Rolen in the quarters and earned a 6-2 decision over Penn's Phil Davis in the semifinals.
DiSalvo, ranked fifth nationally by InterMat and seeded second in the tournament at 149 pounds, won four consecutive matches to reach the final. He fell to Oklahoma State's Zack Esposito, ranked first nationally at 149, 7-6, in a back-and-forth affair in the championship match. Esposito used a 1:30 advantage in riding time to secure the decisive point.
Following an opening round bye, DiSalvo recorded falls against Princeton's Mathew Collins and Oregon's Jeremy McLaughlin. He posted a 12-4 major decision over Cal State Bakersfield's Brandon Doyle in the quarters, then advanced to the final via an 8-4 decision over Boise State's Tyler Sherfey.
Luke Smith advanced to the semifinals at 125 pounds, then worked his way through the consolation bracket en route to a third-place finish. Along the way, he pinned Stanford's 12th-ranked Tanner Gardner and, in the third-place match, earned a 3-1 decision over Northwestern's No. 7 John Velez.
At 133 pounds, Jason Borrelli advanced to the semifinals before ultimately finishing fourth. Borrelli, ranked eighth nationally, was 4-2 in six tournament matches. He dropped a 6-1 decision to Penn's Jake Strayer in the third-place match.
Also finishing in the top six for CMU were Brandon Carter (fourth, 141), Christian Sinnott (fourth, 184), Eric Neil (sixth, 157), Brandon Sinnott (sixth, 174) and Bubba Gritter (sixth, 285).
The Chippewas are back in action on Dec. 29-30, competing in the Midlands Championships in Evanson, Ill. CMU finished fourth in a field of 60 teams at Midlands last year.
