Chippewas Sweep Western Kentucky, 4-1 and 8-4

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -Central Michigan University swept a doubleheader here Saturday afternoon against Western Kentucky University for its first wins of the 2005 baseball season.
The Chippewas won the first game, 4-1, and then captured the nightcap, 8-4.
CMU is now 2-4 for the season while the Hilltoppers drop to 2-6. Game four of the series is slated for here Sunday at 1 p.m.
Senior right-hander Jason Cairns tossed a complete nine-inning gem in the opener to even his record at 1-1. Cairns scattered four hits and gave up one earned run while walking four and striking out two.
The Chippewas trailed 1-0 going into the seventh when they scored three times. Jim Geldhof doubled and eventually scored on a grounder by Bryan Mitzel. Two more runs scored on WKU errors.
CMU capped its scoring in the eighth when Troy Moratti walked, moved to second on Geldhof's bunt and scored when Mitzel was safe on an error.
The Chippewas had five hits and didn't commit an error. The Hilltoppers had four hits and four errors. Jeremy Crum and Geldhof had two hits each for CMU.
Sophomore left-hander Jayson Ruhlman went all seven innings in game two and struck out a career-high 13 batters to even his record at 1-1. He gave up six hits, walked four and was touched for four earned runs.
CMU pounded four Hilltopper hurlers for 13 hits including three each by redshirt freshman designated hitter Brad Foutch and Crum. Mitzel added two hits including a homer, his second of the season, and drove in two runs. Geldhof had a hit and two RBI while Crum, Eric Cannon and J.T. Jones also drove in runs.
The Hilltoppers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second but the Chippewas tied it with two in the third and then broke it open with three in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.. WKU capped its scoring with solo tallies in the sixth and seventh.
