BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Freshman right-hander Josh Collmenter made his college debut a memorable one.
The 6-4, 235-pounder from Homer tossed a complete game four-hitter in Central Michigan University's 5-1 baseball win here Sunday afternoon over Western Kentucky University.
Collmenter struck out 13 Hilltopper batters and didn't walk one.
The win gave the Chippewas three wins out of four against WKU and upped their season record to 3-4. WKU falls to 2-7.
Collmenter blanked the home team through the first six innings when the Hilltoppers scored on a double and a bloop single to right.
CMU pounded out 12 hits in support of its rookie hurler with Jim Geldhof collecting three. Jeremy Crum, David Latour Jr., and J.T. Jones added two safeties each.
The Chippewas broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fifth. Derek Schaller reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Jones' triple to right field. Jones then scored on a double by Crum.
Geldhof opened the two-run sixth with a single and moved to third when Kurtis Wells made it to second on an error. Bryan Mitzel singled in one run and Latour singled in a second for a 4-0 Chippewa lead.
After WKU scored in the seventh to cut the deficit to 4-1, CMU posted an insurance run in the ninth when Geldhof doubled and scored on a single by Wells.
The Chippewas are idle this week before launching a seven-game spring trip to Bradenton, Fla., on Saturday against Connecticut.
