Chippewas Win in 10 Innings, 6-5

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Junior shortstop Troy Moratti knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning here Sunday night to give Central Michigan University a 6-5 baseball win over Georgetown University.
With the bases loaded, Moratti grounded into a force out at second but beat the relay throw to first to allow freshman catcher Tyler Stovall score the winning run.
CMU is now 4-5 for the season while the Hoyas fall to 4-5.
Moratti was the hitting hero for CMU. In addition to his game-winning RBI, the Grand Rapids CC transfer had three hits and two RBI. Kurtis Wells, Ryan Peel and Stovall had two hits apiece to lead the Chippewas.
CMU used four pitchers with junior Mark Lundquist going the final one and two-third innings for the win. He gave up one hit and fanned one to raise his record to 1-0.
Senior Jason Cairns started and went the first five and one-third frames for the Chippewas. He allowed six hits and four runs, two of them earned. He struck out five and walked five.
Sophomore Mike Kirschenheiter then tossed two scoreless innings, giving up two hits and whiffing three against no walks. Sophomore James Ricchio took over for for the next inning, allowing one earned run thanks to a couple of walks.
Georgetown scored a run in the top of the ninth off Ricchio to force extra innings.
The Chippewas return to action in their spring trip here with a game on Monday against Sacred Heart at 2:30 p.m. Sophomore Jayson Ruhlman is slated to get the start for CMU.
