BRADENTON, Fla. - The Central Michigan University baseball team finished its spring trip strong with a 15-0 pounding of Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon.
The Chippewas improve to 9-5 this season and finish the trip 6-1. They have won six in a row and nine of their last 10. CMU has outscored it last four opponents, 55-8.
After a scoreless first inning, CMU got on the board with a three-run homer by J.T. Jones in the top of the second. Jones finished the day 2-for-3 with four RBI and one run scored. A sacrifice fly by Jim Geldhof scored Jeremy Crum for CMU's fourth run of the inning.
The Chippewas added three more runs in the third to blow the game open. CMU had five singles in the inning with Ryan Peel scoring Kurtis Wells, Jones plating David Latour, and Troy Moratti drawing a walk to score Peel.
The Maroon and Gold added one run in both the fourth and the fifth, four in the eighth and two in the ninth for the final of 15. CMU pounded out 23 hits while making zero errors.
Not to be outdone by CMU's batters, pitcher Jayson Ruhlman put together another solid outing to improve to 3-1 this season. The sophomore left-hander went eight scoreless innings, allowing just five hits. He struck out 12 while walking just one.
Junior Mark Lundquist came on in relief in the ninth and faced the minimum, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
Senior David Latour finished the day 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored and one RBI. Leadoff hitter Jeremy Crum was 4-for-6 with two runs scored, one RBI and three stolen bases.
The Chippewas return home for the week before heading back out on the road for a three-game series with Southeast Missouri State next weekend, March 18-20.
