ORLANDO, Fla. - The first three Central Michigan University batters singled and later scored but the Chippewas couldn't sustain their quick start in a 6-3 loss to the University of Central Florida on Friday afternoon at the UCF Tournament.
CMU had nine hits, four coming in the first inning, but the Golden Knights tallied six hits and took advantage of two Chippewa errors.
Karen Hohs led the game off with a bunt single and she stole second before freshman Suzie Giroux singled to right. Lindsey Calme then drove in Hohs with an RBI bunt single. Jacque Benedict had an RBI single to drive in Giroux and CMU's third tally crossed the plate when Calme scored from third as Benedict was picked off trying to steal second.
But, CMU couldn't manufacture a run the rest of the way while UCF added four runs in the second inning and two more in the third.
CMU falls to 1-2 on the season while the host Knights improve to 18-10.
Redshirt freshman Chivon Kloepfer led CMU's offensive effort with a pair of hits while freshman Amy Hudson added a double.
Freshman pitcher Amy Candioto started in the circle for the Maroon and Gold but she lasted just one and two-thirds innings while giving up four hits and four runs (all earned). Jessica Garvin came on for four and a third innings of relief and she gave up two hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out four.
Lindsay Enders picked up the win for UCF going the distance while fanning eight.
CMU will play two games at the UCF Tournament on Saturday, facing Eastern Kentucky at 9 a.m., and Michigan State at 11 a.m.
Earlier in the day the Chippewas fell to Penn State by a 3-0 count.
"I was disappointed in our hitting the first game against Penn State," head coach Margo Jonker said. "We faced a good pitcher but we were unable to make any adjustments.
"Against UCF, we played with great energy from the start but then we settled in and made four infield miscues in one inning. Garvin did a nice job of pitching today. Because we are confident in our infield defense, our strategy is to get the opponents to hit ground balls and let our defense do the rest. But, we didn't come through today and it was frustrating."
