ORLANDO, Fla. -- Penn State used an eight-run fifth inning to put an early end to a 9-1 Nittany Lion victory over the Central Michigan University Chippewas on Tuesday morning in Orlando.
Penn State improves to 6-5 while the Chippewas fall to 3-4 on the year.
PSU knocked Chippewa reliever Jill DeRoche around for five hits in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game on the eight-run rule.
The game was tied 1-1 after CMU tallied its only score of the game in the top of the fourth when Karen Hohs led the inning off with a double, stole third and then scored on a bunt single by freshman Amy Hudson.
CMU starter Jessica Garvin went the first four innings and she allowed just one run but got tagged for six hits. DeRoche (0-1) was then brought in but the Chippewas didn't record an out with her in the circle as she gave up five hits, walked two, hit one batter and had an infielder commit an error for the nine batters she faced. Freshman Amy Candioto was called upon to try and halt the PSU rally but the Lions pushed it up to the eight-run margin before CMU could get out of the inning.
The Chippewas were held to just three hits while Penn State racked up 12 and didn't commit an error in the field.
Linsey Calme joined Hohs and Hudson as the only Chippewas to record hits.
CMU is now off until Thursday when it heads to Clearwater for the Speedline Invitational. The Chippewas face Pittsburgh at 11 a.m., on March 10.
