MUNCIE, Ind. -- Central Michigan University busted out the long ball for one of the few times this season but it wasn't enough as Ball State held on for a 6-5 Mid-American Conference baseball win here Saturday.
The loss ended CMU's four-game winning streak and dropped its MAC mark to 3-5 and 20-13 overall. BSU is now 22-1 and 9-2.
All five of the Chippewa runs came via the home run, something lacking this season. CMU had only 11 roundtrippers prior to Saturday but added three in this game alone.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third on a three-run homer of their own by Brad Miller.
CMU got a solo shot from Bryan Mitzel in the fifth to make it 3-1 and then Troy Moratti slugged a two-run homer in the sixth to tie it at 3-3.
The Cardinals answered with three of their own in the bottom of the sixth to chase CMU starter Jason Cairns and take a 6-3 lead.
The Chippewas got two back in the ninth when David Latour Jr. went big fly but they could get no closer.
Cairns was the loser, falling to 3-5. Mark Lundquist pitched well in relief for CMU, going two innings and allowing one hit and one walk against a strikeout.
Ben Snyder went eight innings to get the win for BSU.
The final game of the series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. Jayson Ruhlman is slated to pitch for the Chippewas.
